One of the most common questions we get is simple but genuinely important: will all our luggage fit? Nobody wants to discover at pickup that the bags do not go in. The honest answer is that it depends on two things — how many people are travelling and how big the bags are. Once you understand the trade-off, choosing the right van becomes easy.

Every van has a fixed amount of interior space, shared between seats and boot. The more seats you fill with passengers, the less room is left for suitcases. A 17-seater van carrying ten people has generous luggage space; the very same van filled to seventeen has room mainly for backpacks and soft bags. A simple rule of thumb

If your group is travelling with one large suitcase each, plan for roughly one 'seat of luggage budget' for every couple of big cases. In practice, families heading to the airport often size up one tier — choosing a 13- or 17-seater even for a smaller group — purely so everyone's cases ride in comfort rather than stacked on the back seat.

Soft bags and backpacks pack down and fill gaps; hard-shell suitcases do not. Sports gear, golf bags, baby equipment and shopping hauls all eat into the boot faster than people expect, so it is always worth mentioning them when you book.

Why the seat count is the wrong number to book on

Almost every luggage problem we see starts the same way: a group counts heads, finds a van with that many seats and books it. The trouble is that seats and luggage space compete for the same volume. A ten-seater carrying ten people has very little room left; the same vehicle carrying seven swallows a substantial amount. That is not a quirk of one model, it is simply how vans work, and it is why our fleet listing shows several passenger-and-luggage combinations for each vehicle rather than a single capacity figure. Read those combinations as a trade-off curve, not a specification. The practical rule is to count your bags before you count your seats, then find the van that handles both with a little room spare. Stepping up one size usually costs a modest amount more and removes the problem entirely — which on a five-hour drive is money well spent.

The bags people forget to count

Checked suitcases are easy to remember. What catches groups out is everything else. Golf clubs take a surprising amount of length. Prams and strollers do not fold as small as their owners believe. Musical instruments, sports gear, coolers, boxes of shopping, and the bags of food that seem to materialise on any journey home all take space that nobody allocated. Then there is the return leg, which on some routes is a different proposition entirely — a group heading to Tangkak for fabric or Ipoh for food will come back considerably heavier than it left. When you enquire, describe what you are carrying rather than just counting cases, and mention the return separately if you expect it to differ. We would far rather send a larger van than solve a capacity problem in a car park with a schedule to keep.
