Seven hours north to Perak
Taiping is around 640 kilometres from Singapore, seven to eight hours up the length of the peninsula. It is a town with an unusual amount to recommend it — the Lake Gardens, the colonial-era streets, and Maxwell Hill rising behind it — and a reputation as the wettest town in the country, which is worth packing for. A drive of this length is genuinely tiring to do yourself, particularly with a group. In a private van the driver takes the road, the passengers do not, and the same vehicle carries you from your Singapore doorstep to your Taiping accommodation.
How we plan a long northern run
On anything past six hours we plan at least two proper rest stops on the expressway, and more if the group wants them — there is no charge for stopping sensibly. Departure timing matters more than people expect. An early morning start clears the checkpoint before it builds and puts you in Taiping by evening; some customers prefer an overnight run, which is quieter on the road and delivers you at the start of the following day. What we would steer you away from is a late-afternoon departure, which combines the worst checkpoint window with an arrival in the small hours.
